Cat Calls LLC.

Menu Foods, a major manufacturer of dog and cat foods in North America, announced a recall of 60 million containers of canned food and food in pounces sold between 12/3/06 and 3/6/07.  Menu foods manufactures pet foods for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers.  Kroger, Safeway, Wal-Mart and Petsmart store brands are involved in the recall, as are some Iams and Eukaneuba formulas.  Hill's Science Diet and some Nestle Purina brands are participating in a voluntary recall as well.  This recall does not affect dry food.

For a current list of dog and cat foods recalled (with production dates), go to www.menufoods.com/recall or call the Pet Food Recall Hotline at 1 866 895-2708.

If your animal has been eating one of the recalled foods, we recommend that you have your pet screened for kidney problems.  This requires blood and urine samples.  You should have your pet screened even if your pet is not currently showing symptoms.  Have your pet checked immediately if you observe any of the following symptoms:  lethargy, drinking excessively, urinating excessively, vomiting or not eating.

Tests of some affected product have not revealed the cause of sickness.  There have been a small number of reported cases of several cats and one dog from the U.S. becoming sick and develoing signs of kidney failure.  The signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, and drinking/urinating more than usual.  Ten deaths (9 cats and 1 dog) have been reported at this time.
